Are you embarrassed by your smile? You’re not alone. Cosmetic dentistry can fix a distracting chip in your teeth, a gap in your teeth, and brighten stained or discolored teeth. Two of the most common dental procedures to enhance your smile include porcelain veneers and composite bonding.

The professionals at Dr. Tosun Dental Clinic have put together this helpful guide to help you understand the pros and cons of dental veneers and composite bonding to help you realize your dream smile.

What is composite bonding?

Porcelain Veneers vs. Composite Bonding

A minimally invasive dental procedure, composite bonding is a modern way to restore teeth, either for cosmetic appeal, or to build tooth structure that has been lost. Composite bonding involves bonding a tooth-colored resin to existing teeth to reshape them or improve their color. There are many colors of resin to choose from to ensure the color best matches your tooth. Skilled technicians work artistically to match the color to each client for optimal results.

Composite bonding is also ideal for fixing small cracks or chips in the teeth, as you do not need to cover the entire tooth with resin and it creates a natural-looking effect that matches your existing teeth. Dental bonding uses the same durable resin used for tooth-colored fillings.

Composite bonding can help with the following dental corrections

  • Improve heavily discolored teeth
  • Improved small chips
  • Correct unevenly shaped teeth
  • Eliminate small gaps between teeth
  • And more

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain Veneers vs. Composite Bonding

Porcelain veneers are essentially tooth-shaped shells that cover the entire front surface of the teeth. Made from thin porcelain, as the name suggests, these covers are bonded to the teeth to change the shape, size, color, and even length. Personalized to match your teeth, dental veneers give your teeth a natural appearance while enhancing your dental imperfections.

Porcelain veneers can help with the following dental corrections

  • Correcting discolored teeth
  • Closing gaps between teeth
  • Correcting weakened teeth
  • Correcting cracked or broken teeth
  • Realigning uneven or irregular teeth
  • And more

How long do they last?

While the longevity of both porcelain veneers and composite bonding depend on your personal habits and dental care, both options provide long lasting options to enhance your smile. Composite veneers can last around 5 years with proper care. Porcelain veneers however, can last for life with proper care.

How to maintain porcelain veneers and composite bonding?

Both porcelain veneers and composite bonding require similar maintenance.

  • Dental health : You should always practice proper oral hygiene by brushing and flossing at least twice a day. It’s also important to stick to your routine dental appointments for cleaning and checkups.
  • Avoid hard foods : Try not to chew anything hard, such as hard candies or ice. This can damage your veneers and cause them to crack, just like it can your real teeth.
  • Limit dark colored food and drink : Porcelain veneers and composite bonding can stain your teeth just like your natural teeth can. You should limit or avoid dark-colored food and beverages. This will help to keep your cosmetic dental work and natural teeth sparkling clean.

Are there any risks?

As with any dental procedure, there are a few risks involved with both treatment options. Composite bonding is more likely to chip or fade compared to porcelain veneers. For this reason, you need to be more careful when applying pressure to them. Over time, the resin may separate from your natural teeth.

Additionally, composite bonding is not as durable compared to ceramic veneers. This is especially true if the individual grinds their teeth. Composite bonding may also stain in the long term, as colored liquids may penetrate between the tooth and the veneer. Likewise, porcelain veneers can crack or fall off for the same reasons. However, this should not happen if you visit a reputable dentist with cosmetic dental experience for your treatment. Some patients experience increased sensitivity after the treatment, which resolves over time.

Regardless of whether you move forward with porcelain veneers or composite bonding, we recommend using a night guard to protect your teeth. Night guards will protect your dental work and natural teeth from the effects of clenching or grinding.
